Do cats find chasing and attacking toys fun, or is it purely just instinct?

Could they enjoy it, like a child would enjoy playing with a toy?
And if they are locked in a room with nothing in it, would they get bored, or are they not intelligent enough for that?

Cats are very similar to people in the fact they need mental stimulation. They instinctively chase toys because it is practice to make a "kill" but also enjoy it. Many housecats have never been outside and the fun they get out of chasing toys is the closest they will ever get to hunting in the outdoors.

It probably a combination of both natural instinct to hunt and also to play and amuse themselves.
Putting a cat in an enclosed space without something to occupy them will likely bore them after a little while. Yet they can find ways of playing with almost anything – even their tails!

For my kitty its mainly entertainment. Hes so playful and i think he also knows that we’re all watching him and he likes to be the center of attention. He gets plenty of instinct practice outside chasing the chipmunks so i think the playful stuff is solely for fun. his favorite toys are the tennis balls because all he has to do is stick out his claws and its like velcro. lol. so cute

As much as it’s so sweet to see your cat chasing toys, socks, etc around the house & yard. It’s all natural instincts. There will be no flies, spiders & mice etc. in your home.

They love "the hunt" The idea of capturing something is their instinct. Mine loves to catch bugs and then release them and start all over again! To them it’s a game (If they are well fed) And if they capture to kill, then they are doing it to eat!
