Is there a reason my cat doesn’t like catnip?
Hey there, so I have a 3 year old cat, his name is Sylvester, now Sylvester doesn’t like catnip, I bought him a bunch of catnip toys, and he just turns his nose up at them, I have tried getting loose catnip, he sniffs at it, and then walks away, why is this? Is he just a weirdo? Or what?
It’s not unheard of for cats not to respond to catnip. I don’t recall the reason though.
If he’s among the immune you can try him on another herb, valerian. Valerian is safe and has much the same effect as catnip.

Some cats do not have the genetic trait that allows them to get "high" on catnip. There’s nothing wrong with your cat, he’s just missed out on that particular bit of DNA. Approximately 15% of all cats do not respond to catnip, so you’ve gotten a rare and virtuous teetotaler.

No, he is not a weirdo. Some cats love catnip and others don’t. Mine cat doesn’t react to it at all. Try giving him a green olive as some cats go crazy with them.

While around 60% of cats will react to catnip as though on a high, the other 40% couldn’t give two hoots and will walk past without a second look …. so to answer your question, Sylvester is one of the 40% brigade.

No, he is not a weirdo. Like what many have answered, some cats just doesn’t respond to catnips. It’s genetics. But I have known cats that does not respond when they are younger but will over time. I have no explanation for this though.

It’s estimated that around 30-40% of cats have no interest whatsoever in catnip. Oriental breeds and kittens under 6 months seem to be immune to it’s effects.
Perhaps you might want to try Valerian or Honeysuckle spray on his toys, as many cats like those scents.
