Is it ok for a kitten to play with Catnip?

Hey my mom and I just got a new kitten and we bought her a catnip toy but my mom won’t let me give it to the kitten until she finds out the it’s safe for her to play with it. My mom is very overprotective about these types of things because she heard that catnip makes cats act weird or something like and she’s paranoid about it even though I told her that it was ok. So…is it?

Yep. Catnip is perfectly harmless to cats. They can even eat it without having any ill effects. It does make them act wierd, but it’s not a drug or permanent effect in any way.

Give the toy to the kitty and enjoy the craziness!!!

so long as theres no way you kitten can rip open the toy or anything she/he should be fine with it. cats go HYPER for catnip, they adore it! sometimes it’s good to be protective however i’m sure your kittie would enjoy a good play with this :) whats its name? say hi for me!

Try giving the kitten just a little bit to see what happens. Most cats are fine with it, they just act kind of "high" :) My kitten got so excited that he peed everywhere…but that’s probably the worst that will happen.

Cat toys can contain catnip and some cats love to play with them while others are not interested. Cat owners do not need to worry about allowing their cats access to catnip because there are, for the most part, no negative side effects to doing so. However, some cats become overly excited when exposed to catnip, so aging or obese cats with heart troubles should be kept away from it. A diabetic cat can also experience complications from catnip.

Yes, a catnip toy is fine for a kitten. I am getting one for a kitten I have been bottle feeding today, which is nearly four weeks old. He is wanting to play fight with my hand which isn’t a good habit, so a feather toy to play with him or giving him the catnip toy when he wants to play rough, is a good distraction from your hands or other parts of your body so a bad habit isn’t started (of attacking your hands or feet, etc)that could get dangerous as your kitty grows.

Yes, it is perfectly fine to give a kitten catnip. However, kittens are sometimes too young to experience the "high" that cats get from catnip. So, if you don’t see a reaction that does not mean that you won’t when your kitten gets older.

Kittens are already frisky enough and I have used a common string to prove that to myself many times. And the jolly fun memories too.

Catnip tends to get older cats frisky.

Raise five of my own, and wish they had a cure for wanting them around, but allergies prevent it. And I’m not talking about the average stuff you get which you can see advertised solutions for. I did not get sneezy, watery eyes, or breathless, I got something worse. But I sure have a lot of good memories from my experience with them, a duck, and several dogs I kept too. Stupid Dander!

well i think everything is good in moderation! i would try a small amount on somethingand see how the kitten reacts to it! kittens already have a high evergy level so just keep it in small doses! and have fun

It’s fine. I have 3 cats and they didn’t start feeling the effects of catnip until they were about 5-6 months old though.
So it might not "work" right away.
Your moms being way over protective, to make it a fact for her you can just go to petsmart and ask the vet dept. (its free to just ask a question)

    Goodluck.
